His family later migrated to New York City, where Mel Winkler had his first exposure to acting, which set the course for his career. Mel Winkler's acting career spanned over four decades in which he worked in theatre, television, and film industries. He appeared in some of the most popular movies of the late 20th century, including Doc Hollywood, Malcolm X, and Devil in a Blue Dress. Besides, he was also a prolific voice-over artist, lending his voice to characters in numerous TV shows and movies, including The Smurfs, Batman: The Animated Series, and RoboCop: Alpha Commando. Mel Winkler's distinguished career earned him numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Black Theatre Alliance Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama for his performance in Two Trains Running. In addition, he was also nominated for an Emmy Award for his voice-over work in the animated program, Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child. In addition to his professional career, Mel Winkler also worked tirelessly to promote arts and education in his community, particularly as a co-founder of the Inner City Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
