Joan Kemp-Welch

Bio – Joan Kemp-Welch

Joan Kemp-Welch was a noteworthy figure in the United Kingdom, known for her contributions in the fields of medicine, art, and politics. Born on February 4, 1906, in London, Joan was the daughter of Harold Kemp-Welch, a prominent surgeon, and suffragette Isabella Welch. She completed her education from Oxford where she studied medicine and worked as an Honorary Physician at the Royal Free Hospital, London. Kemp-Welch was a pioneer in the field of endocrinology, specializing in the study of hormones in the body. Apart from her medical profession, Joan Kemp-Welch was also an experienced artist. She studied at London's Slade School of Fine Art and exhibited her paintings at various exhibitions in London and Paris. She was widely recognized as a skillful painter, particularly for her use of light and shade in her works. However, her medical profession often took precedence over her love for art. Kemp-Welch was a passionate believer in social and political change. She became an active member of the Labour Party, and during World War II, she served as a medical officer in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). After the war, she continued her political work, campaigning for better healthcare rights and the establishment of the National Health Service (NHS). She was also a prominent member of the Medical Women's Federation and the Medical Practitioners' Union. Joan Kemp-Welch passed away on August 29, 1999, at the age of 93, but her contributions to medicine, art, and politics continue to inspire many. Her legacy is one of dedication to social and political change, as well as the pursuit of knowledge in multiple fields.
