"I don't think about art when I'm working. I try to think about life."
Judith Scott
Judith Scott Bio
Judith Scott was an American artist born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1943. She had Down syndrome and was deaf, and was institutionalized for much of her life before being introduced to art. At the age of 42, she was taken by her twin sister Joyce to the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, California, where she discovered her talent for fiber art. Scott became famous for her intricate, colorful sculptures made from found materials such as twine, yarn, and fabric.
Scott's works have been exhibited internationally and are included in the collections of major art museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 2005, and her work has been the subject of numerous books and documentaries.
In addition to being recognized for her artistic achievements, Scott is also celebrated for being an advocate for people with disabilities. Her success and visibility in the art world challenged widespread misconceptions about the capabilities of people with disabilities, and she inspired many artists with disabilities to pursue their own creative passions. Her legacy continues to be celebrated through the Judith Scott Memorial Fund, which supports artists with disabilities and promotes inclusive arts programs.
Scott passed away in 2005, but her legacy lives on through her artwork, advocacy, and impact on the art world. Her story serves as a testament to the power of art to transcend barriers and connect people across differences.
