In addition to his mountaineering achievements, Khimichev was also an active member of the Russian air force. He served as a pilot and was awarded the title of Honored Test Pilot of the Russian Federation. He also holds the rank of Colonel. Despite his extensive travels and profession, Khimichev remained committed to his passion for mountaineering until his untimely death in June 2013. He died in a climbing accident while attempting to summit Lhotse, the fourth highest peak in the world. Khimichev’s legacy lives on through the Boris Khimichev Foundation, which was founded by his wife, Natalia, after his death. The foundation provides financial support to promote and develop mountain tourism in Russia.
