Derek Oldham Bio
Derek Oldham, born on 9th February 1918, was a famous English tenor who made his name in the 1930s-40s golden era of British classical music. He was born in Liverpool, England, and began singing in his church choir at a young age. Known for his rich, mellifluous voice and excellent breath control, Oldham was famous for his interpretations of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.
Oldham made his professional opera debut in 1933 in Carl Rosa's production of “Aida.” Still a schoolboy aged 15 at the time, he was hired as a chorister and he recalled that he was "paid £1 per week and a return train fare between Liverpool and Manchester, with free fish and chips at Tricket's café with Alec Dodge, my fellow schoolboy, also in the chorus." Oldham went on to perform at most of the major British opera companies, including the Beecham Opera, the British National Opera Company, the Covent Garden Opera Company.
One of Derek Oldham’s most famous roles was that of The Mikado in Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera “The Mikado,” a role that he played over 1,500 times throughout his career. He was celebrated for his ability to bring a genuine sense of humor and whimsy to the role, and his performances in the role were noted for their vocal precision and comic timing. Oldham was also noted for his portrayals of other Gilbert and Sullivan characters, including Frederic in “The Pirates of Penzance” and Ralph Rackstraw in “H.M.S. Pinafore”.
Oldham was one of the most popular British tenors of his era, and known for his sincerity of expression and his ability to connect with audiences. He retired from performing in 1960, after which he moved to Canada with his family to work as a singing teacher. Derek Oldham died on 31 May 1994 in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, but his recordings and performances continue to inspire young musicians today.
