Edward Gierwiałło, popularly known as Edward Gierek, was a prominent politician from Poland. He was born on January 6, 1913, in Porąbka, a village in present-day Poland. Gierek rose to fame as the First Secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) from 1970 to 1980, during the communist regime in Poland. Gierek's political career began in the early 1930s when he joined the Communist Party of Poland (KPP). However, due to his involvement in various illegal activities, he was arrested multiple times by the Polish authorities. In 1939, following the Nazi invasion of Poland, Gierek was released from prison and joined the Soviet Union. During World War II, he fought as part of the Polish People's Army against the German occupation. After the war, Gierek returned to Poland and became an active member of the PZPR. His charisma and leadership skills allowed him to quickly rise within the party's ranks. In 1970, after a period of widespread social unrest and protests against price increases, Gierek was appointed as the First Secretary of the PZPR. He implemented various economic reforms and policies aimed at improving living standards and increasing consumer goods availability in Poland.
