James Brown "Jim" Montgomery Jr. Bio
Jim Montgomery is an accomplished figure in the world of professional ice hockey. Born on June 30, 1969, in Montreal, Canada, he later became a citizen of the United States. Montgomery's career as both a player and coach has solidified his status as one of the most prominent figures in the sport. He began his hockey journey as a player in the NCAA, where he thrived at the University of Maine, leading the Black Bears to their first-ever National Championship in 1993, earning him the distinction of being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. After college, Montgomery embarked on a professional playing career that spanned over a decade. He was primarily known for his time in the National Hockey League (NHL), where he suited up for the St. Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyers, San Jose Sharks, and Dallas Stars. As a center, Montgomery displayed skills such as playmaking, faceoff expertise, and durability, which made him a valuable asset to his respective teams. He retired in 2005 and focused on a new chapter in his life—coaching. Jim Montgomery's transition from player to coach was equally successful, if not more so. He began his coaching career at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), where he served as an assistant coach for three seasons. Montgomery's ability to analyze and strategize the game earned him recognition, leading him to be appointed as the head coach of the USHL's Dubuque Fighting Saints in 2010. Under his guidance, the team enjoyed tremendous success, winning the USHL championship in 2013 and earning Montgomery the accolade of USHL Coach of the Year. In 2015, Montgomery made a significant leap in his coaching journey when he was named the head coach of the University of Denver Pioneers men's ice hockey team. During his tenure, he accomplished remarkable feats that solidified his standing as an elite coach in the NCAA. The Pioneers captured the National Championship in 2017, and Montgomery was recognized as the recipient of the prestigious Spencer Penrose Award as the NCAA's Division I Coach of the Year. His exceptional coaching tenure at Denver further bolstered his reputation in the hockey world, eventually leading him to his next career milestone—an opportunity to coach in the NHL.
