Albert Johnson Bio

Albert Johnson, known by his stage name "Prodigy," was a prominent Canadian rapper and member of the legendary hip-hop duo Mobb Deep. Born on November 2, 1974, in Toronto, Ontario, Johnson later moved to Queensbridge, New York, where he formed a partnership with rapper Havoc. Together, they became one of the most influential acts in East Coast hip-hop during the 1990s and early 2000s. Johnson gained recognition for his gritty and introspective lyrics, and his distinctive delivery made his verses instantly recognizable. Tragically, his life was cut short in 2017, leaving behind a legacy that solidifies his place as one of Canada's most talented and celebrated musical exports.

Born to a father of Guyanese descent and a mother of African-American heritage, Albert Johnson endured a tumultuous childhood marked by poverty and numerous relocations. At a young age, he discovered a passion for rap music and began honing his skills as a lyricist. Johnson's move to Queensbridge, a notorious housing project in New York City, exposed him to the harsh realities of street life which, in turn, greatly influenced his music.

In 1993, Johnson, now known as Prodigy, and his childhood friend Havoc released their debut album "Juvenile Hell," which received mixed reviews from critics. However, they quickly rebounded with their sophomore effort, "The Infamous," released in 1995. The album showcased Prodigy's sharp storytelling abilities, his raw flow dealing with themes like urban violence and survival. It was an instant hit amongst both critics and fans, earning Mobb Deep a devoted following within the hip-hop community.

Though Mobb Deep experienced several highs and lows throughout their career, Prodigy remained a constant force in the rap scene. His solo projects, such as 2000's "H.N.I.C." and 2017's "The Hegelian Dialectic (The Book of Revelation)," demonstrated his versatility and continued relevance in the genre. Tragically, on June 20, 2017, Prodigy passed away at the age of 42 due to complications from sickle-cell anemia, a lifelong battle he had openly discussed in his music.

Despite his untimely demise, Prodigy's impact on music cannot be understated. His heartfelt and thought-provoking lyrics helped shape the sound of East Coast rap and influenced many aspiring artists. Albert Johnson, also known as Prodigy, will always be remembered as a talented wordsmith and a true representative of Canadian hip-hop talent in the global music landscape.
