Brooks Thompson

Brooks Thompson Bio

Brooks Thompson was an American professional basketball player and coach, best known for his time in the NBA and his successful coaching career. Born on April 19, 1972, in Dallas, Texas, Thompson quickly made a name for himself as a talented athlete. He attended Kimball High School, where he led the basketball team to two state titles and was recognized as the Texas Player of the Year in 1990. Thompson's exceptional skills on the court caught the attention of many college recruiters. After graduating from high school, Brooks Thompson chose to play college basketball for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. During his time there from 1990 to 1994, Thompson achieved impressive feats, earning him a spot in the university's Athletics Hall of Fame. Notably, he was part of the 1995 team that made it to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament, cementing his reputation as a top-tier player. Following his college career, Brooks Thompson was selected as the 27th overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic. He played as a point guard for various NBA teams, including the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, and Utah Jazz. Thompson's professional basketball career spanned from 1994 to 2000, and although he didn't achieve the same level of success in the NBA as he did in college, he remained a well-respected player. After retiring from playing, Brooks Thompson pursued a career in coaching. He began as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns in 2002 and went on to hold various coaching positions, including the head coach roles for the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). Thompson made significant contributions in these roles, earning conference Coach of the Year awards and leading UTSA to a conference championship in 2011. Despite his achievements, Brooks Thompson faced personal and health challenges. In 2016, he was diagnosed with double organ failure and received a life-saving liver transplant. Tragically, Thompson passed away on June 9, 2016, due to complications from his transplant surgery. His legacy lives on through his contributions to the game of basketball as both a player and a coach, as well as his impact on the lives of those he coached.
