Ernie Moss Bio
Ernie Moss was a beloved British football player hailing from United Kingdom and is often regarded as a legend in the sport. Born on 12 March 1949 in Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside, Moss began his professional career in 1967 when he signed with Chesterfield Football Club. He quickly made an impact on the pitch with his exceptional goal-scoring abilities and became a much-admired figure in British football.
Moss's time at Chesterfield is where his legacy truly began to take shape. Known for his remarkable goal-scoring record, he netted an impressive 191 goals in 491 appearances for the club. His ability to find the back of the net consistently earned him the nickname "The King of Saltergate," the name of Chesterfield's former stadium. His impact on the team and the town was so profound that a statue of him was erected outside the club's new stadium, Proact Stadium, as a testament to his contributions and the love fans had for him.
Beyond his exploits at Chesterfield, Ernie Moss also had successful spells at other clubs such as Mansfield Town and Stockport County. He played a significant role in helping Mansfield Town secure their first-ever promotion to the Second Division during the 1976-77 season. Additionally, Moss had a successful international career, representing the England national team at the under-23 level.
Off the pitch, Ernie Moss was known for his humble nature and dedication to the sport. Even after retiring, he remained closely tied to Chesterfield Football Club as their ambassador, continuously supporting and engaging with fans and the local community. Sadly, Moss passed away on 28 July 2021, leaving behind a rich legacy in British football and an enduring impact on the lives of those who had the pleasure of witnessing his incredible talent.
