José Lasa

José Lasa Bio

José Lasa, born on June 15, 1956, in San Sebastián, Spain, was not a celebrity in the traditional sense. He was an ordinary citizen whose life tragically intersected with an infamous episode in Spanish history. José Lasa, along with his friend José Zabala, became one of the countless victims of terrorism perpetrated by the Basque separatist group ETA. His story serves as a reminder of the devastating toll that violence can have on innocent lives.

Growing up in the Basque Country during a period of intense political turmoil, José Lasa witnessed firsthand the effects of the ETA's violent campaign for independence. In 1983, at the age of 27, he and his friend José Zabala decided to collaborate with the Spanish authorities, providing key information about ETA members and activities. Their intent was to contribute to the defeat of the terrorist group and help establish peace in their homeland.

Sadly, their act of bravery resulted in their own untimely demise. On October 24, 1983, both José Lasa and José Zabala were abducted from their home and subsequently held captive by ETA members. They were subjected to weeks of torture before being executed. Their bodies were later found buried in cement at a farm in France, revealing the horrific fate that had befallen them.

José Lasa's story touched the hearts of many in Spain and beyond, drawing attention to the dangers faced by those who chose to stand against terrorism. His name became a symbol of resilience and solidarity, as countless citizens rallied together to denounce the violence and demand justice for his murder. José Lasa's legacy continues to inspire a commitment to the pursuit of peace and an end to political extremism in the Basque Country and beyond.
