Charlie Coles

Charlie Coles Bio

Charlie Coles was an esteemed professional basketball player and coach hailing from the United States. Born on September 6, 1942, in Ohio, Coles developed a passion for the game from a young age. He played college basketball at Miami University in Ohio, where he excelled as a point guard, becoming one of the finest players in the school's history. Coles' skill and dedication on the court laid the foundation for his illustrious career as both a player and a coach. After graduating from college, Charlie Coles pursued a professional basketball career, playing for the former Washington Caps in the American Basketball Association (ABA) during the 1967-68 season. Although his playing time in the ABA was limited, his talent and knowledge of the game led to a successful transition into coaching. Coles began his coaching journey as an assistant at Miami University, his alma mater, in 1969. Later, he served as an assistant coach at the University of Toledo, University of Central Florida, and Ohio University. In 1985, Charlie Coles was appointed as the head coach of Miami University's men's basketball team, a position he held for 16 seasons. Under his tenure, Coles transformed the RedHawks program into one of the most successful in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Known for his charismatic personality and unwavering dedication, Coles led the team to multiple MAC regular-season championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. His leadership and commitment to excellence earned him numerous accolades, including being named MAC Coach of the Year four times. Despite retiring from coaching in 2012, Charlie Coles left an indelible mark on the basketball world. Known as much for his wit and humor as his coaching prowess, Coles was deeply respected by players, colleagues, and fans alike. His lasting impact on Miami University, the MAC, and the Ohio basketball community is a testament to his enduring legacy. Sadly, Charlie Coles passed away on June 7, 2013, leaving a void in the basketball world but a remarkable legacy that continues to inspire aspiring players and coaches.
