Joey Meyer

Joey Meyer Bio

Joey Meyer is an American former basketball player and coach who had a successful career in the sport. Born on April 9, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois, Meyer grew up in a basketball-loving family. His father, Ray Meyer, was a legendary college basketball coach at DePaul University, and his older brother, Tom, also had a successful coaching career. With basketball deeply ingrained in his upbringing, it was no surprise that Joey Meyer would follow a similar path.

Meyer attended Notre Dame High School in Niles, Illinois, where he played basketball and excelled on the court. He was a star player and helped lead his team to a state championship in 1968. After high school, Meyer continued his basketball career at Northern Illinois University, where he played as a forward from 1970 to 1974. During his college years, he showcased his skills and helped the team achieve success with his contributions.

Following his graduation, Meyer began his coaching career, initially working as an assistant coach at several universities, including DePaul and Loyola University Chicago. However, his true moment came in 1984 when he was named the head coach of DePaul University's men's basketball team. Taking over from his father, he had big shoes to fill, but Meyer successfully led the team for 13 seasons.

During his tenure as head coach, Meyer guided the DePaul Blue Demons to numerous victories and several appearances in the NCAA Tournament. His coaching abilities were widely recognized, and he earned multiple Coach of the Year honors. However, as expectations continued to rise, the program experienced a decline, and Meyer was ultimately relieved of his coaching duties at DePaul in 1997.

Despite the end of his coaching career at DePaul, Joey Meyer's contributions to basketball and his lasting impact on the sport cannot be overlooked. He remains a respected figure in the basketball community and continues to be involved in the sport through various endeavors. Whether it's his playing days, coaching achievements, or his continued involvement in the basketball world, Joey Meyer's name is synonymous with the sport and his legacy as a coach and player will not be forgotten.
