Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton was a prominent basketball player born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1922. Clifton is widely recognized as the first African-American to sign a contract with an NBA team in 1950, breaking barriers in professional basketball during a time of racial segregation. Clifton's basketball journey started during his time at DuSable High School in Chicago, where he played alongside legendary players such as Zeke Bella and Gene "Chips" Banks. The team became one of the most dominant forces in high school basketball, capturing the state championship in 1939. Clifton's exceptional skills and abilities earned him a scholarship to Xavier University, making him the first African-American athlete to attend the school on an athletic scholarship. Following a successful college career, Clifton served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
