Rex Walters is a former professional basketball player and the current head coach of the Grand Rapids Gold in the NBA G League. Born on March 12, 1970, in Omaha, Nebraska, Walters is of Filipino and German descent. He attended the prestigious Northwestern High School in Detroit, Michigan, where he established himself as a standout basketball player. After an impressive high school career, Walters earned a scholarship to the University of Kansas and played for the Jayhawks from 1990 to 1993. He was a key contributor to the team's success, helping them reach the Final Four in both 1991 and 1993. During his collegiate career, Walters earned several accolades, including being named the Big Eight Player of the Year in 1993. Following his successful college career, Walters was selected as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets. He embarked on his professional career, playing six seasons in the NBA for the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, and Kansas City/Sacramento Kings. Although he had a relatively short NBA career, Walters was known for his strong work ethic and versatility on the court. After retiring as a player, Walters transitioned into coaching. He worked as an assistant coach at Valparaiso University before being appointed as the head coach at Florida Atlantic University in 2006. He later served as an assistant coach at the University of South Florida and the University of Nevada, Reno, before becoming the head coach of the Grand Rapids Drive (now the Grand Rapids Gold) in the NBA G League in 2014.
