"I would rather be a good ball player than anything else I know. It was a joyful realization that I could possess that skill."

Beals Becker

Beals Becker Bio

Beals Becker was an accomplished American athlete who gained fame as a professional baseball player in the early 20th century. Born on February 12, 1886, in El Dorado, Kansas, Becker quickly showed his talent in sports, particularly excelling in track and field events. However, he chose to pursue a career in baseball, where he displayed exceptional skills as an outfielder for various teams in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1908 to 1915. Becker's talent was first noticed by MLB scouts in 1908 while he was playing for a minor league team in the Western League. He was subsequently signed by the Cincinnati Reds and made his major league debut on October 4, 1908. Throughout his career, Becker played for different teams, including the Boston Doves, Philadelphia Phillies, and St. Louis Cardinals. He established himself as a reliable outfielder and a consistent hitter, known for his speed and exceptional defensive plays. One of the highlights of Becker's career came during the 1912 World Series when he was a member of the Boston Red Sox. It was during Game 3 of the series that Becker made one of his most memorable plays. With the defining moment arriving in the 10th inning, Becker hit a fly ball to right field that was dropped by New York Giants' outfielder Fred Snodgrass. Becker seized the opportunity and managed to round the bases, scoring the winning run for the Red Sox. This play became widely known as "Snodgrass' Muff," and it greatly contributed to the Red Sox winning the World Series that year. Despite his success as a professional baseball player, Becker’s career was cut short due to a shoulder injury. In 1915, he retired from MLB and embarked on a different path. He joined the United States Navy and served as a lieutenant during World War I and later as a college baseball coach. Though his playing career may have been relatively short, Beals Becker left a lasting legacy in the world of baseball and remains remembered as a highly respected and influential figure in American sports history.
