Ed Kirkpatrick, born Edward Lee Kirkpatrick on August 8, 1944, in Spokane, Washington, was an American Major League Baseball (MLB) player. He is best known for his career as an outfielder, primarily for the Kansas City Royals and California Angels, during the 1960s and 1970s. Kirkpatrick's unique playing style, combined with his dynamic personality, made him a beloved figure amongst fans and earned him a place in the hearts of many baseball enthusiasts.
Kirkpatrick attended West Valley High School in Spokane, where he initially showcased his exceptional athletic abilities as a standout baseball player. After graduation, he was signed by the Kansas City Athletics organization in 1962 and quickly climbed the ranks of the minor leagues. His exceptional performance in the minor leagues caught the attention of the Royals, who acquired him through the 1968 expansion draft.
During his career in the MLB, Kirkpatrick played as an outfielder, primarily in centerfield. Known for his flashy defensive plays, incredible speed, and strong arm, he quickly became a fan favorite and a celebrated figure within the baseball community. Additionally, his batting style, characterized by power hitting and aggressive baserunning, consistently brought excitement and entertainment to the game.
While Kirkpatrick's career was not marked by any major individual accolades or championship wins, his impact on the teams he played for was substantial. He played a crucial role in the success of the Royals, contributing significantly to their appearance in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) twice, in 1976 and 1977. Additionally, Kirkpatrick's vibrant and enthusiastic personality off the field made him a beloved figure amongst teammates and fans alike.
After retiring from professional baseball in 1981, Kirkpatrick remained involved in the sport, serving as a scout for several teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners.
