John Boccabella is an American former professional baseball player who was born on June 29, 1941, in San Francisco, California. He gained recognition and popularity for his career in Major League Baseball (MLB) where he primarily played as a catcher. Boccabella played for multiple teams throughout his career, including the Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos, and Oakland Athletics. Although he was not a household name like some of his contemporaries, Boccabella made significant contributions to the sport during his time in the league.

Boccabella began his professional baseball journey after being drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1963. He made his MLB debut on April 22, 1963, and spent a total of six seasons with the Cubs, from 1963 to 1968. During his time with the team, Boccabella showcased his solid defensive skills as a catcher. He also demonstrated a respectable batting average, hitting .271 over his Cubs career.

In 1969, Boccabella was selected by the Montreal Expos in the expansion draft and became an integral part of the team's inaugural season. Known for his consistency and reliability, Boccabella played an important role as a backup catcher for the Expos and made appearances in over 70 games. He continued to contribute both offensively and defensively, further solidifying his reputation as a reliable player.

Towards the end of his career, Boccabella joined the Oakland Athletics, where he played for the 1975 and 1976 seasons. Although his playing time was limited, Boccabella's experience and knowledge brought value to the team as a mentor to younger players. He retired from professional baseball after the 1976 season, finishing his career with a batting average of .239 and 73 home runs.
