Born on November 6, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, Candelaria was of Puerto Rican heritage. He gained fame as a left-handed pitcher who had an exceptional career spanning over 19 years in Major League Baseball (MLB). Candelaria was known for his intimidating presence on the mound, his exceptional fastball, and his ability to consistently perform under pressure. Candelaria's professional career began in 1975 when he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He quickly rose through the ranks and made his debut in the MLB in September of the same year.
