Fraser began his coaching career in 1963 as an assistant coach at the University of Miami. In 1973, he became the head coach and transformed the program into a national powerhouse. Under his leadership, the Miami Hurricanes reached the College World Series 12 times, including winning national championships in 1982 and 1985. Fraser's coaching style emphasized not only the importance of skill development but also the significance of building a strong team culture and camaraderie among players.
Apart from his success on the field, Fraser also revolutionized college baseball off the field. He pioneered several marketing techniques to promote the sport and increase its popularity, including creating events like "Friday Night Lights," where games were played at night under floodlights, drawing larger crowds. Fraser also introduced the concept of the "Weekend Baseball series" in college baseball, which helped generate more media attention and attract bigger audiences.
Throughout his career, Fraser received various accolades and honors. He was a nine-time winner of the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year and the American Baseball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 1985.
