Walker attended Oberlin College, a renowned institution known for its progressive stance on social issues. At Oberlin, he met his teammate, Moses Fleetwood Walker, who was also African-American. Together, the Walker brothers played for the Oberlin College football team, challenging the racial status quo in collegiate sports. It was a remarkable feat, as organized football was predominantly reserved for white players at the time.
In 1881, Moses Fleetwood Walker signed a contract with the Toledo Blue Stockings, a Major League Baseball team. Weldy Walker, on the other hand, pursued a career in law and became an attorney. However, in 1881, he had a brief stint playing professional football for the Masillon Football Club, making him the first African-American to play professional football.
