"I am Queen Elizabeth's army, but also I am a son, ambitious for his father's sake, a devoted husband and a man who wants a son to carry on his line."

Arthur Edward George

Arthur Edward George Bio

Arthur Edward George, known to most as the Duke of Windsor, was a prominent figure in British royalty. Born on June 23, 1894, in Richmond, Surrey, England, he was the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary. His given name was Arthur Edward, but he later took the regnal name of Edward VIII when he ascended the throne. His family connections and influential position in British society propelled him to become one of the most well-known figures in the United Kingdom during the early 20th century.

Arthur Edward George had a troubled and controversial reign as king. He became monarch on January 20, 1936, following the death of his father, but his reign was short-lived, lasting only 326 days. In an unprecedented move, Edward VIII abdicated the throne on December 11, 1936, in order to marry Wallis Simpson, an American socialite who was twice-divorced. This decision caused a constitutional crisis and sparked a significant debate within the British establishment.

Despite his decision to give up the throne, Edward VIII maintained a high-profile public life post-abdication. He adopted the title of Duke of Windsor and pursued diplomatic and charitable activities. Edward and Wallis Simpson, now known as the Duchess of Windsor, regularly appeared in the press and socialized with celebrities and elites around the world. They were often seen as glamorous jet-setters, living a life filled with luxury and extravagance.

Throughout his life, the Duke of Windsor also faced controversy related to his political leanings and associations. He was accused of harboring sympathies towards Nazi Germany, and during World War II, he was appointed Governor of the Bahamas, a post often interpreted as a way for the British government to keep him away from Europe during the conflict. These allegations tainted his public image and continued to be a source of fascination and speculation even after his death on May 28, 1972, in Paris, France.
