His given name was Arthur Edward, but he later took the regnal name of Edward VIII when he ascended the throne. Arthur Edward George had a troubled and controversial reign as king. He became monarch on January 20, 1936, following the death of his father, but his reign was short-lived, lasting only 326 days.
