Donnie Allison

Donnie Allison Bio

Donnie Allison is an American retired NASCAR driver and a member of the infamous "Alabama Gang," a group of successful racers from Hueytown, Alabama. Born on September 7, 1939, in Miami, Florida, Allison spent much of his childhood in Miami before his family relocated to Birmingham, Alabama. He grew up in a family deeply involved in motorsports, as his father, Ed Allison, was a successful stock car racer. Donnie followed in his father's footsteps, quickly making a name for himself in the racing world.

Allison began his NASCAR career in 1961, and throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, he established himself as a talented driver. He achieved his first major success in 1967 when he won his first NASCAR Grand National (now called the Cup Series) race at the Oxford Plains Speedway. This victory was followed by many others, including a notable win in the 1970 Daytona 500.

However, it was a particular race that took place on February 18, 1979, that forever etched Donnie Allison's name in NASCAR's history. Known as the "1979 Daytona 500," this race became infamous for its dramatic finish and the subsequent altercation between Donnie Allison and another driver, Cale Yarborough. On the final lap, Yarborough attempted to pass Allison for the lead, resulting in a collision that caused both cars to crash into the infield grass. As Yarborough and Allison emerged from their cars, a heated physical altercation unfolded, captured on national television. The incident became one of the most iconic moments in NASCAR and elevated Donnie Allison's recognition within the racing community.

Following his retirement from racing in 1988, Donnie Allison remained involved in motorsports as a team owner and mentor. His contributions to the sport of NASCAR and his role in shaping its history have earned him a place of honor among racing legends. Donnie's accomplishments, both on and off the track, continue to inspire and influence generations of aspiring young racers across the United States.
