Ed Hugus was an American race car driver and entrepreneur who gained fame in the world of sports car racing during the 1950s and 1960s. Born on November 8, 1928, in Gridley, Illinois, Hugus exhibited a natural talent and passion for racing from an early age. He began his racing career in the early 1950s and quickly made a name for himself as a fierce competitor on both American and international racing circuits.

Hugus is best known for his accomplishments in endurance racing, particularly in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 1957, he drove alongside his teammate Walt Hansgen in a Jaguar D-Type, finishing a remarkable third overall and first in the 3-liter class. This achievement marked a significant breakthrough for American drivers in the highly regarded race and solidified Hugus’ reputation as one of the leading sports car drivers of his time.

Apart from his success in Le Mans, Hugus had numerous victories and class wins in other prestigious races, including the 12 Hours of Sebring, 24 Hours of Daytona, and the SCCA National Championship. His tremendous skill behind the wheel, coupled with his unwavering determination, allowed him to compete against some of the most revered drivers in motorsport history.

Following his racing career, Hugus transitioned to the business world, where he became a successful entrepreneur. He opened several automobile-related businesses, including several car dealerships and a tire distribution company. While his focus shifted from racing, Hugus continued to be involved in the motorsport community and remained a beloved figure among fans and fellow drivers until his passing on November 8, 2006, at the age of 78.
