Born on October 10, 1930, in Lodi, Italy, Castellotti showed a natural talent and passion for racing from a young age. He began his racing career in the early 1950s, quickly establishing himself as a rising star in the motorsport world. Castellotti made his debut in Formula One racing in 1955, driving for the Lancia team. He quickly adapted to the demanding nature of the sport and showcased his exceptional driving skills during his first season. Castellotti achieved his first podium finish at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1955, finishing in third place, which further solidified his position as a formidable competitor. In the same year, Castellotti participated in the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, partnering with racing legend Juan Manuel Fangio. The duo piloted a Ferrari to an impressive second-place finish, indicating Castellotti's ability to excel in various forms of motorsport. Throughout his career, he exhibited great versatility, taking part in Formula Two and sports car races with equal success. Sadly, Castellotti's promising career was tragically cut short. On March 14, 1957, while testing a new Ferrari 335S sports car at the Modena Autodrome, Castellotti lost control of the vehicle and crashed, resulting in his untimely death at the age of 26.
