Although primarily known for his achievements in American motorsports, Follmer's talent and versatility extended to various racing disciplines, including open-wheel racing, sports car racing, and stock car racing.

In the late 1960s, he gained recognition as one of the most successful American road racers, competing in the Sports Car Club of America's (SCCA) Trans-Am Series. Follmer was a dominant force in the Trans-Am circuit, winning the championship title in 1972 and securing a total of eight race wins.
In addition to his success in the Trans-Am Series, Follmer also ventured into open-wheel racing. He competed in the prestigious Indianapolis 500 multiple times and achieved his best finish in 1974, securing second place.
