Ace Bailey
Ace Bailey Bio
Ace Bailey, born as Irvine Wallace Bailey Jr. on June 13, 1948, was a renowned ice hockey player from Canada who later transitioned into a successful career as a scout in the National Hockey League (NHL). Born and raised in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Bailey discovered a passion for hockey at a young age and honed his skills on the ice. His dedication and talent eventually led him to become one of the most respected figures in the hockey community.
Bailey's professional hockey career saw him play with the Boston Bruins for almost a decade. He joined the team in the late 1960s and quickly established himself as a pivotal player in their lineup. Known for his exceptional offensive skills and speedy skating, Bailey became a valuable asset for the Bruins, contributing significantly to the team's success during his tenure. His remarkable ability to score goals, combined with his strong playmaking skills, made him a beloved figure among fans and his teammates alike.
Tragically, Bailey's career was cut short due to a devastating incident that occurred during a preseason game on September 11, 2001. On this fateful day, the Bruins were scheduled to play an exhibition game against the Los Angeles Kings in Colorado. However, the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center had occurred earlier that morning, causing chaos and panic across the nation. The game was ultimately canceled, but Bailey, along with fellow scout Mark Bavis, decided to take a flight back to Los Angeles to join the team for their return home.
Sadly, their flight, United Airlines Flight 175, was one of the airplanes hijacked by terrorists and crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Both Bailey and Bavis lost their lives in the horrific event, leaving the hockey community devastated and mourning the loss of two beloved individuals. In honor of Bailey's memory, the Los Angeles Kings established the Ace Bailey Memorial Award in 2002, which is given annually to the Kings player who best exemplifies excellence on and off the ice.
Although Ace Bailey's life was tragically cut short, his legacy as an exceptional hockey player and beloved member of the Canadian hockey community lives on. Known for his skill, dedication, and passion for the game, Bailey continues to be remembered as an icon in the sport. His untimely death served as a tragic reminder of the devastating impact of the September 11 attacks, leaving a profound impact on the hockey world and beyond.
