Born on January 5, 1961, in Beaverton, Ontario, Canada, McRae moved to the United States at a young age and grew up in the state of Minnesota. He became a renowned figure in the world of ice hockey, specifically known for his tough and physical playing style, earning him the nickname "McRaebarian."
McRae had a successful career in the National Hockey League (NHL), where he played as a forward for several teams from 1981 to 1997. After being drafted by the Quebec Nordiques in 1980, he made his NHL debut the following year. McRae spent the majority of his career with the Minnesota North Stars, playing for the team from 1984 to 1993. He was known for his tenacity on the ice, fearlessly engaging in physical confrontations and showing a high level of competitiveness.
Besides the Minnesota North Stars, McRae also played for the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, Tampa Bay Lightning, and St. Louis Blues during his NHL career. Throughout his 16 seasons in the league, he played a total of 576 regular-season games, tallying 48 goals, 66 assists, and 2,457 penalty minutes. McRae's physicality and determination on the ice made him a fan favorite.
After retiring as a player, McRae remained involved in ice hockey and transitioned into an executive role within the sport. He served as the director of player personnel for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and later became the president of hockey operations for the St. Louis Blues.
