Born on March 30, 1978, in St. Albert, Alberta, Lysak's journey in the world of hockey started at a young age. He began playing in the Western Hockey League (WHL) for the Spokane Chiefs during the 1994-1995 season, impressing scouts and fans with his athletic abilities and tenacity.
Lysak's impressive performance in junior hockey paved the way for him to be selected in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He was chosen in the second round, 49th overall, by the Dallas Stars.
