After attending the University of Oklahoma, where he majored in theater, Hampton moved to New York City and started his career as an actor in the late 1950s. In the following years, he appeared in various television shows and movies, including Gunsmoke, The Longest Yard, and Teen Wolf. While Hampton's acting career was noteworthy, he was also a talented writer and director. He wrote and directed the 1987 film A Winner Never Quits, which was based on a true story of a baseball player who overcame a disability to become a champion. He also directed episodes of popular TV shows such as The Hogan Family and Evening Shade. In 2002, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oklahoma City Theatre Company.
