Martin Gélinas is a former professional ice hockey player from Canada, who later transitioned into a successful coaching career. He was born on June 5, 1970, in Shawinigan, Quebec. Gélinas began his hockey journey in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), where he played for Hull Olympiques during the 1986-1987 season. He quickly caught the attention of the National Hockey League (NHL) scouts and was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft.
Gélinas made his NHL debut with the Kings in the 1988-1989 season, starting a career that would span over 18 years. Known for his versatility and speed as a forward, Gélinas played for numerous teams throughout his NHL career, including the Edmonton Oilers, Quebec Nordiques, Vancouver Canucks, Carolina Hurricanes, Calgary Flames, and Nashville Predators. He achieved success as a player, reaching the Stanley Cup Finals on three occasions, once with the Oilers in 1990 and twice with the Flames in 2004 and 2015.
After retiring as a player, Gélinas immersed himself into the coaching side of the game. He began as an assistant coach for the Predators in 2008, where he remained until 2014. During his time with the Predators, Gélinas played a vital role in the development of young players and special teams strategies. In 2016, Gélinas joined the Flames organization and served as a development coach for the team's prospects.
Throughout his career, Gélinas has always been highly regarded as a player and coach. He epitomized hard work, dedication, and a passion for the sport. His contributions to the game have earned him respect and recognition, making him a cherished figure in the hockey community in Canada and beyond.
