Wayne Maki
Wayne Maki Bio
Wayne Maki was a Canadian ice hockey player who gained recognition for his impressive skills and contributions to the sport. Born on September 24, 1944, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Maki developed a deep passion for hockey from an early age. Throughout his career, he played in various leagues, including the National Hockey League (NHL) and World Hockey Association (WHA), leaving a lasting impact on the Canadian ice hockey scene.
Maki's professional career began in the early 1960s when he joined the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA). His exceptional performance as a forward caught the attention of many scouts, leading to his selection by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1962 NHL Amateur Draft. Maki made his NHL debut on February 18, 1965, and quickly showcased his puck-handling skills and scoring abilities, becoming an asset to the Blackhawks.
Maki played for the Chicago Blackhawks for five seasons, displaying his talent as a consistent goal scorer and an enforcer on the ice. Despite struggling with injuries during his tenure with the Blackhawks, he managed to record impressive stats. Maki's physicality and aggressive style of play also earned him a reputation as a tough player, willing to stand up for his teammates and defend the ice.
In 1972, Maki joined the Vancouver Canucks following an expansion draft by the WHA's Vancouver Blazers. Once again, he proved to be a powerful offensive force, becoming the team's leading scorer in their inaugural season. However, his career with the Canucks was marred when an on-ice altercation with Boston Bruins player Ted Green resulted in Maki being charged with assault. This incident had lasting consequences on Maki's career, as he would never regain the same level of success thereafter.
Wayne Maki's professional hockey career came to an end in 1974. After retirement, he returned to his hometown of Sault Ste. Marie and became involved in coaching young players, nurturing the next generation of hockey talents. Maki's contributions to Canadian ice hockey, both as a player and coach, have left an enduring legacy in the sport. Although his career was marked by both success and challenges, Wayne Maki's impact on the ice remains an important part of Canadian hockey history.
