Familiarizing with the game

Question

I have been playing the game on n off for a while... but this time it took me a long time for me to get my bearing.  As a lot of time has passed.

Any tips?

If you are feeling uncertain, my recommendation would be to search through the many decent youtube chess-related channels. Find a couple of channels that you can stand (I like Hikaru Nakamura's, gothamchess's, and annacramling's, generally) and watch their videos as they recap games or provide chess tutorials targeted at different skill levels.

Fundamentally, though, though key to developing a skill is to use it. Play chess.
