Medoff received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Miami and his Master's and PhD from Stanford University. He started his teaching career at New Mexico State University in 1966, where he founded the American Southwest Theatre Company. He was a professor of theatre arts at the university for over 50 years. Aside from "Children of a Lesser God," Medoff wrote several other plays, screenplays, and novels. His other notable works include "When You Comin' Back, Red Ryder?" and "The Wager." He also wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of "Children of a Lesser God," which was released in 1986 and starred Marlee Matlin and William Hurt.
