Kurt Raab was a German actor, director, and writer who had a significant impact on German cinema during the second half of the 20th century. He was born on July 20, 1941, in Bergzabern, Rhineland-Palatinate, and began his acting career in the late 1960s. Raab was known for his bold, unconventional approach to theater and film, which often pushed the limits of censorship and helped redefine German cinema.
Raab began his acting career in 1966 and quickly rose to prominence in the German film industry. His breakthrough role came in 1969 when he starred in the film "Katzelmacher," directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Raab would go on to collaborate extensively with Fassbinder, appearing in over 20 films and frequently serving as a writer and director. He also managed to create a name for himself in other notable German films such as "The Marriage of Maria Braun" (1978) and "Lili Marleen" (1981).
Raab's legacy in the German film industry is characterized by his fierce commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging conventions. His plays were often highly political, dealing with controversial topics such as homosexuality and social injustice. He also became an influential force in German multimedia theater, using video, music, and dance to create groundbreaking and highly visceral experiences. His creativity and ability to mold different form genres into an amalgam of art, entertainment, and thought were highly valued across Germany.
Sadly, Raab passed away on June 28, 1988, in Munich, Germany, following a long battle with AIDS.
