Cortez is best known for his prolific career in the early days of Hollywood, primarily during the 1920s and 1930s. He was a highly versatile actor, adept at playing a wide range of characters, from romantic leads to hard-boiled detectives.

Cortez began his career in silent films, often cast as a dashing and charismatic leading man. However, with the advent of sound, he successfully transitioned into talking pictures. Throughout his career, he appeared in over 100 films, showcasing his versatility and talent. Some of his notable movies include "The Torrent" (1926), "The Maltese Falcon" (1931), and "The Phantom of Crestwood" (1932).

Aside from his acting career, Cortez also had a brief stint as a director in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He directed a handful of films, including "The Cat Creeps" (1930) and "Under Suspicion" (1930).
