Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, is not a celebrity in the traditional sense, but rather a prominent political figure in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Born on March 26, 1935, in Safed, British Mandate Palestine (now Israel), Abbas is a member of the Fatah political party and has been serving as the President of the Palestinian Authority (PA) since 2005. He has played a significant role in Palestinian politics for many decades, engaged in negotiations with Israel, and advocated for Palestinian statehood.
Abbas grew up in the city of Safed and later fled with his family during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. He eventually settled in Damascus, Syria, where he attended school and then pursued his higher education in Egypt. Abbas earned a law degree from the University of Damascus in 1958, and later completed his Ph.D. in history at the Oriental College in Moscow, Russia, in 1982. His academic work focused on the "connection between the Nazis and the Zionist movement before World War II," adding an interesting layer to his political career.
Abbas first entered the world of Palestinian politics in the 1950s when he joined Fatah, a secular nationalist movement led by Yasser Arafat. Throughout his career, Abbas held various influential positions within the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), including serving as the PLO's chief negotiator during the Oslo Accords in the 1990s. These accords marked a significant milestone in Israeli-Palestinian relations, as they aimed to establish a framework for peace negotiations and paved the way for limited Palestinian self-governance.
As President of the Palestinian Authority, Abbas is responsible for overseeing administrative affairs in the West Bank, as well as representing the Palestinian people on the international stage. However, his leadership has faced criticism from both within and outside the Palestinian territories, with some accusing him of being too moderate and compromising too much in negotiations with Israel. Despite these criticisms, Mahmoud Abbas remains one of the most recognizable figures in Palestinian politics, constantly striving for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
