Mia May was an Austrian actress, writer, and director who was active during the silent film era. She was born on June 2, 1884, in Vienna, Austria, under the name Hermine Pfleger. May directed and starred in her most famous film, "Die Herrin der Welt" (Mistress of the World), which was released in 1919. The film was a huge commercial success, and May became one of the most prominent figures in Austrian cinema. Her films often explored themes of power, love, and gender roles. During the early 1920s, May's career slowed down, and she retired from acting in 1926. However, she continued to direct films and wrote several screenplays. May also worked as a producer during the 1930s, but as a Jew, she was forced to flee Austria when the Nazis came to power in 1938. She settled in Switzerland and lived there until her death in 1980 at the age of 96.
