Stig Egede-Nissen was a Norwegian stage and film actor born on August 1, 1893, in Oslo, Norway. He was the son of a theatre director and actor and grew up in a family of actors, writers, and directors. He started his career in the theatre where he quickly gained recognition as one of the most talented actors of his generation. He later moved to the film industry where he solidified his reputation as one of Norway's greatest film actors. Egede-Nissen’s career spanned over four decades and he starred in more than 30 Norwegian films. He was particularly known for his roles as romantic heroes in romantic comedies but was equally at home in serious dramatic roles. Some of his most famous films include “Fante-Anne” (1920), “Laila” (1929), “Troll-Elgen” (1936) and “De vergeløse” (1955). He was also an accomplished theatre director and worked at various major theatres in Norway. Apart from his acting work, Egede-Nissen was also involved in the cultural scene in Norway. He was a member of the Norwegian Academy for Language and Literature and was a co-founder of the Norwegian Actors’ Association. He was also honored with several awards for his work, including the King's Medal of Merit in gold and Norway's highest cultural award, the King's Medal of Merit with Sword. Egede-Nissen passed away on July 12, 1968, in Oslo, Norway, at the age of 74. He will always be remembered as one of Norway’s greatest actors and as a cultural icon who contributed greatly to the country's cultural life.
