She is renowned for her extraordinary actions during World War I, where she disguised herself as a man to fight in the Serbian Army.
Lazarević's remarkable journey began when she enlisted in the army at the tender age of 18. Faced with the restrictions preventing women from joining military forces, she took on the identity of a soldier named Milun Lazarević. Throughout her military career, she participated in various battles, demonstrating exceptional bravery and earning numerous commendations for her actions on the frontlines.
One of Milunka's most notable feats was her capture of 23 Bulgarian soldiers. She single-handedly defeated them in hand-to-hand combat and marched them back to the Serbian camp as prisoners. This act of bravery earned her the highest military honor at the time, the Order of Karađorđe's Star with Swords. She went on to fight in multiple battles and campaigns, often leading her fellow soldiers with great courage and determination.
After being wounded several times during the war, Lazarević was eventually discovered to be a woman and honorably discharged. Despite her gender, she received the highest military rank available to a Serbian soldier, Vojvoda, for her extraordinary bravery and exceptional service.
