Columpa C. Bobb is a Canadian award-winning actress and theatre director, known for her contributions to Indigenous theatre in Canada. Born in 1964 in British Columbia, Canada, Bobb is a member of the Sto:lo Nation and grew up on the traditional territory of the Ts'elxwéyeqw Tribe. Her passion for theatre began at an early age, and she pursued her dream by studying theatre at Simon Fraser University. Bobb has made significant contributions to the Canadian theatre scene, specifically in Indigenous theatre. In 1996, she co-founded the Indigenous theatre company, Urban Ink Productions, which has produced and staged many important Indigenous theatrical works. With Urban Ink, Bobb has collaborated with other Indigenous artists to challenge stereotypes and celebrate Indigenous culture. Bobb has also worked extensively as an actress, with notable performances in productions such as Marie Clements’ “Copper Thunderbird” and in her own play, “The Girl Who Swam Forever.” Bobb’s work has been recognized with numerous awards and nominations. She was nominated for the Jessie Richardson Theatre Award in 2001 for her performance in “Rita Joe." In 2008, she was awarded the George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature for her play “Savage.” In 2019, she was awarded the Mayor’s Arts Award for her contributions to Vancouver’s arts and culture scene. Bobb’s activism and advocacy for Indigenous theatre have paved the way for new voices to emerge and have inspired generations of young Indigenous artists. In addition to her theatrical pursuits, Bobb is also an educator and mentor. She has taught at universities and institutions across Canada and played a key role in the development of the Indigenous Studies Program at the University of British Columbia. Her influence on Canadian theatre and culture is immeasurable, and she continues to push boundaries and inspire new performers and storytellers with her innovative and powerful works.
