Josephine Douglas was an English television presenter, actress and writer born in 1917 in Essex. She grew up in a home for the blind, which her mother ran, due to her father's early death from war injuries. Her early life experiences gave her a deep sense of social justice and she was a passionate campaigner for people with disabilities until her death in 2003. She became a popular TV presenter in the 1950s and 1960s and also acted in films and theatre productions. Douglas began her career in entertainment as a dancer in West End shows before moving into television presenting. She was the first female face on BBC TV when she started presenting a children's show called "Juke Box Jury" in 1959. Her intelligent and warm presenting style endeared her to audiences and she went on to present a number of other successful shows, including "The Sky at Night" and "Strictly Come Dancing," which was known as "Come Dancing" in its early years. In addition to her broadcasting career, Douglas was also an accomplished writer. She authored several books, including "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" and "The Other Side of the Coin." Douglas was very active in charities and founded the Josephine and Jack Project for the Blind in 1976, which organised social activities for blind people. She was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1977 for her services to broadcasting and to charity.
