Philipp Lothar Mayring was a notable German professor, philosopher, author and academician. He was born on 9 April 1944 in Munich, Germany. Mayring was widely known for his immense contributions in the field of social science research, especially in the areas of qualitative methodologies and media analysis. He was recognized as one of the leading researchers and thinkers in the field. Mayring did his doctoral degree at the University of Munich in 1971. He then started his career as a professor of philosophy at Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, where he later shifted his interest in the development of scientific theories and methods. In 1979, he was appointed as a professor of Educational Sciences at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria, and finally held the position of emeritus professor in the same university. Mayring's work and contributions in the methodological and conceptual aspects of social science research are globally acknowledged. His works include, "Qualitative Inhaltsanalyse: Grundlagen und Techniken" (Qualitative Content Analysis: Fundamentals and Techniques), co-founder and editor of “forum qualitative social research”, and also held various editorial positions in academic journals. He was a well-respected mentor to a great number of young researchers, and his teachings and research have huge impact in educational and social science. Mayring was awarded the Senior Austrian Scientist Award in 2007 in recognition of his lifelong contribution to social science research. Philipp Lothar Mayring passed away on 3 March 2020 at age of 75 in Klagenfurt, Austria. Despite his passing, his ideas, methods and theories remain influential in the field of social science research, and his legacy lives on.
