Cacoy began his martial arts career at the tender age of seven. He started training under his uncle, Felipe Cañete, who taught him the basics of Eskrima. At the age of 13, he was already teaching Eskrima to other people. In his youth, Cacoy was also a professional boxer, having fought in several fights from 1953 to 1957.

Cacoy's reputation as a martial artist grew as he began traveling and teaching his unique style of Eskrima, which emphasized flow, speed, and defense. He also created his own style known as the "Cacoy Doce Pares," which focuses on using long-range weapons and techniques based on the twelve strikes of Eskrima. In 1968, he established a renowned martial arts school in Cebu, which trained countless students over the years.

Throughout his career, Cacoy received numerous accolades and awards for his contributions to the martial arts. In 1977, the Philippine government honored him with the prestigious 'Gawad ng Pagkilala' award for his excellence in martial arts.
