Lester James Peries was a renowned Sri Lankan film director, screenwriter, and producer, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of Sinhala cinema. Born on April 5, 1919, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Peries dedicated his life to promoting and shaping the cinematic landscape of the island nation. He is often hailed as the "father of Sri Lankan cinema" due to his significant contributions to the industry. Peries began his career as a journalist before finding his true calling in filmmaking. In 1947, he directed his first feature film, "Rekava," which went on to garner international recognition and firmly establish him as a skilled filmmaker. Peries' career spanned several decades, during which he directed numerous successful films and received numerous accolades both locally and internationally. One of Peries' most notable works is "Gamperaliya" (1964), an adaptation of a novel by Martin Wickramasinghe that is widely considered a masterpiece of Sri Lankan cinema. The film received critical acclaim and was chosen as the first Sri Lankan movie to compete for the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Peries continued to produce acclaimed films throughout his career, often exploring social and cultural issues unique to Sri Lanka. Lester James Peries' immense contribution to the film industry was widely recognized both within Sri Lanka and abroad. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2005 Sri Lanka Film Awards.
