Kirby Higbe, born on April 8, 1915, in Columbia, South Carolina, was a professional baseball player from the United States. Higbe established himself as an outstanding pitcher during the 1940s, primarily playing for the National League teams such as the Philadelphia Phillies, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Pittsburgh Pirates. Known for his exceptional fastball and his ability to outwit opposing batters, Higbe enjoyed a successful career that spanned over a decade.
Higbe made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut in 1937 with the Philadelphia Phillies. Although he initially struggled to make a significant impact, his breakout year came in 1940, where he won 18 games with a remarkable earned run average (ERA) of 3.15. This performance helped Higbe solidify his position as a formidable pitcher and caught the attention of several teams, particularly the Brooklyn Dodgers.
In 1941, Higbe was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers, where he truly flourished. During his tenure with the Dodgers, Higbe achieved great success, including leading the league in shutouts and strikeouts. He played a significant role in the Dodgers' successful run in the 1941 World Series, where they faced the New York Yankees. While the Dodgers ultimately lost the series, Higbe's pitching performances were praised, solidifying his reputation as an elite player.
After his time with the Dodgers, Higbe went on to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates and later for the New York Giants before retiring from professional baseball in 1950.
