Kung Ye
Kung Ye Biografija
Kung Ye, also known as Gojong, was a prominent political leader in the Korean Empire during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was born in 1852 as the second son of King Cheoljong and was chosen as the crown prince at a young age. He ascended to the throne in 1864, at the age of 12, after his father's death. During his reign, he sought to modernize and strengthen Korea in the face of increasing Western imperialist threats.
One of Kung Ye's most significant achievements was the Gabo Reform of 1894, which aimed to modernize Korea's political, social, and economic systems. Under this reform, the Korean Empire adopted Western technologies and institutions, such as a modern army and a centralized government. However, his attempts at reform were met with resistance from conservative factions within the royal court, leading to political instability and ultimately the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894.
Despite his efforts to modernize Korea, Kung Ye faced numerous challenges during his reign, including pressure from Western powers and neighboring countries. In 1905, Korea was forced to sign the Eulsa Treaty with Japan, effectively making it a protectorate of the Japanese Empire. This marked the beginning of Japan's colonial rule over Korea, which lasted until the end of World War II. Kung Ye was eventually forced to abdicate the throne in 1907, marking the end of the Korean Empire and the beginning of Japanese colonial rule.
