George Eastman was an American inventor and businessman who developed and popularized the use of roll film for photography. He was born on July 12, 1854, in Waterville, New York. Although he was born in the United States, his ancestors were from England and his mother was born in the province of Ontario, Canada. Eastman was also of Italian descent on his father's side, with his great-grandparents having emigrated from Italy to the United States in the late 1700s.
Eastman was a self-made man who started his career as a bank clerk in Rochester, New York. He became interested in photography in his spare time and began experimenting with improvements to the photographic process. In 1880, he obtained a patent for a dry-plate coating machine, which made it easier and cheaper to produce photographic plates. In 1884, Eastman patented a roll film camera and began selling it under the name "Kodak." This camera was revolutionary because it allowed ordinary people to take photographs without the need for expensive and complex equipment. The Kodak camera was also lightweight and portable, making it ideal for outdoor photography. Eastman further improved the technology by introducing the Brownie camera in 1900, which was affordable even for children.

He donated over $100 million to the University of Rochester and founded the Eastman School of Music. He also established the Eastman Dental Dispensary, which provided affordable dental care to low-income patients.
