Worku Bikila is a prominent figure in Ethiopia's sports history and a celebrated athlete on the global stage. Born in 1932 in the small town of Jato, Ethiopia, Worku is best known for his incredible achievements in long-distance running, specifically in the marathon. He has left an indelible mark on the sport, etching his name in the annals of Ethiopian athletics.
Worku came from humble beginnings, growing up in a rural farming community. Encouraged by his family and inspired by Ethiopian running legends, he began his journey as a professional athlete in the early 1950s. His talent and dedication quickly caught the attention of coaches and scouts, leading to his eventual selection to represent Ethiopia in international competitions.
However, it was at the 1960 Rome Olympics that Worku truly cemented his place in history. At just 28 years old, he competed in the marathon race and secured a remarkable victory, becoming the first Ethiopian to win an Olympic gold medal. This incredible feat not only made Worku a national hero but also brought global recognition to Ethiopian long-distance running.
