On This Day in History - June 17, 1940

June 17, 1940 #OTD World War II: The troopship RMS Lancastria (Pictured sinking) was sunk by German air attack off the port of Saint-Nazaire during Operation Aerial with over 4,000 fatalities. It is the greatest loss of life in the sinking of any British ship in history. Churchill ordered that news of the sinking be kept secret from the British public.
